Jovino is the newest addition to Union Street and already words of gratitude are sounding throughout the neighborhood - thank the stork who landed this baby here. Its salads, sandwiches, baked goods, and free wi-fi, make it a fabulous addition to the street of upscale shops and sunny sidewalks. It is a people watching place - where one could go to perch and eye the well-groomed community of Pacific Heights. There is something almost perfect about the view of Union Street through Jovino's four wood paneled windows. The restroom looks out onto a garden and overall, the country store look of this café represents the virginal innocence, the simplicity, of a newborn.
Jovino is an order and deliver café with offerings that are fresh, natural and whole. THe healthy selection at Jovino is one that other cafes in the area surprisingly lack. The Asian Con Diment Chile is perfect for those who love spice, the Greek salad is better than some I have had in Greece, and the potpourri of corn chips, potato chips and pretzels which accompany my panini bring feelings of infantile joy. The fare is far from the realm of fast food - it is the work of a chef who knows his craft and wields in a way that simultaneously pleases the adult palate and meets the expectations of the most critical child. Simple, tasty, and easy, it is country gourmet - straight from the garden to the chef to the table.
Recognition goes to Jovino's owner, Ken - a man who has balanced the art of staying busy with a movement and attitude that is both fluid and undisturbed. His vibrant and hospitable demeanor add something other cafes sometimes lack - true relaxation. These skills make him the perfect father for this new little spot. With kindness, patience and authenticity Ken is sure to raise Jovino into a well-rounded adult. With plans to expand the menu to include more sophisticated dishes, it seems certain that this café is going to become a mainstay on Union - a place that gets better and better with time. A woman two tables down is a testament to the greatness - she has consumed her salad down to the very last leaf of organic green.
