Hey, Taqueria El Gran Amigo is not South of the Border, but it is right off of Highway One from San Francisco on your way to Half Moon Bay, Carmel, and Big Sur. You find yourself sitting in a white shanty hut and Mexican music at a medium volume dances in your ear while only a block away from the ocean. The cuisine is South of the Border authentic.
Just enough English is spoken to get your food to the table. I don’t think they knew the meaning of pretentious, which is a good thing. Taqueria El Gran Amigo has Mexican soul food that is served on a shellack and benches. The only art are the colors from the bubble gum machine.
There is no menu, just the pictures of what is on the menu and white board with black letter and sky blue and blue lettering above saying, “Especiales.” If you are driving with your family and everyone gets hungry, this is the place to be…
There is no atmosphere, just Mexican soul food that is true to form.
